In September 2008, Premier Foods was one of the first organisations to sign up to the Food and Drinks Federations’ (FDFs) Transport Efficiency Commitment.

Transport - ‘Fewer and Friendlier’ Delivery Miles

Impact

Transporting food, like all other goods and services, has commercial, environmental and social impacts. Hovis owns and operates its own fleet of delivery vehicles. The majority of the products we manufacture, in our ambient and chilled divisions, are moved by 3rd party logistics providers over which we have less amount of direct management control.

Our Response

Premier Foods is implementing ‘best practice’ into our group logistics and distribution functions. We believe that this approach will deliver both supply chain efficiencies, and cost
reduction, whilst also reducing the environmental and social impacts of distribution activities.

In 2009, Premier Foods signed up to the ‘FDF 5 Fold Environmental Ambition’. We agreed to embed environmental standards in our transport practices, including contracts with third party hauliers as they fall for renewal.

Our objective is to achieve ‘fewer and friendlier’ food transport miles and contribute to an absolute target for the food chain to reduce its environmental and social impacts by 20% by 2012 compared to 2002.
