Mr. Kipling's new £20m Snack Pack line

On the 3 July 2015 we celebrated the launch of our new, state of the art £20m Mr. Kipling Snack Pack production line at our Carlton site. Our modern new line is one of the fastest in Europe, with capacity to produce 1,000 delicious cake slices every hour.

The new line, when combined with our existing production capacity provided by colleagues at our Stoke site, more than doubles our Snack Pack capacity to around 550 million cake slices a year. It's all to help us keep up with climbing demand for our 'cake on the go' slices!

The official launch of the line by the Secretary of State for DEFRA, Liz Truss MP, took place at an event also attended by local MP Dan Jarvis, MEP Richard Corbett, numerous local dignitaries, suppliers, partners and colleagues. BBC Breakfast News broadcast live to the nation from the site all morning, and there was extensive media coverage, including by the local BBC Look North news programme.

Our modern new line is one of the fastest in Europe, with capacity to produce 1,000 delicious cake slices every hour. It mixes, bakes, cools, decorates and packages each slice in only 85 minutes.

Every slice is baked in just 18 mins, using indirect gas convection ovens from which a heat recovery system recovers 15% of the heat, improving efficiency and reducing emissions. In all, the new line produces 66% less waste than other lines. We're proud to say that none of the waste - from the new line or from aby of our sites across the UK - goes to landfill.

The new line uses hygenic, efficient ultrasonic technology to cut the ribbons of cake into slices. Our advanced robotics pick and pack 1,000 slices per hour into our convenient Snack Packs. It's designed to be flexible, enabling us to deliver multiple pack and case sizes to cater to consumer and customer requirements.

We're excited that the new line will result in around 80 new permanent jobs for the site from the Barnsley area, with many of the new roles upskilled to enable our people to support the advanced new technology.
