We apply a ‘Safety First’ approach to everything we do at Premier Foods, every hour of every day. Our goal is that everyone - colleagues, third parties who work with us or visitors - goes home safe and sound at the end of every working day.
We operate an OHSAS 18001 accredited Health and Safety Management System across all sites to drive a preventative and proactive approach to workplace safety.
Our ‘TOPS’ (Total Observation Process) scheme helps with hazard identification, elimination and control and our dedicated Health & Safety teams help us continually improve our performance.
Safety performance is always on the agenda. It's reviewed regularly by site and office management teams, and by our CEO and Executive team at every management meeting.
As a result of this unending attention, over recent years we’ve consistently reduced workplace accidents. Our RIDDOR frequency rate of 0.05 reportable accidents per 100,000 hours worked is less than 10% of the food industry average and we believe one of the lowest achieved by any UK company.
We make ever-increasing efforts to protect the health and wellbeing of our colleagues. Through our dedicated Occupational Health team we provide professional specialist health advice to colleagues on the effects of work on their health and health on their work. We advise our colleagues on ways to improve physical and psychological well-being within the workplace and strategies to prevent illness and injury.
Throughout the year we carry out regular campaigns across the company to highlight how colleagues can minimise risk. We carry out regular health surveillance and screening, and health promotions on topics such as blood pressure, quitting smoking, heart health and flu.
We were proud to be amongst the first 150 companies to have received accreditation to the nationally recognised standards for occupational health established by SEQOHS (Safe, Effective, Quality Occupational Health Service), an initiative pioneered by the Royal College of Physicians, on behalf of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine.
The accreditation is awarded to companies with occupational health services that have been in the vanguard of SEQOHS and have contributed to raising standards to the benefit of employees.
In a letter from the Royal College of Physicians, Richard Heron, President of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine said: “By being in the vanguard of SEQOHS, which was established in 2010, your [Occupational Health] service has shown a commendable commitment to quality and has demonstrated that it can meet these nationally set standards.”
We buy 100% of our palm oil from RSPO sustainable sources.
